Today, I offer Storrs’ poem again, and this time I’ve added notes off to the side which highlight the various connections Storrs made to the Belle of Amherst, other poets of the day, major themes found in Dickinson’s poetry, and even some individual poems written by Dickinson. It’s clear that Storrs had in-depth knowledge of her subject!
BTW: I’ve continued to look for info related to this poem’s original publication. It was definitely not in the May 22, 1891 issue of the Springfield (weekly) Republican. Based on what I found last night, I believe it might have been printed in the Springfield (Sunday) Republican on May 22, 1892; however, I can’t seem to find a digitized copy of this paper – at least not one accessible to me. I’ll keep looking! ; )
