I wonder if Dickinson loved watermelon? LOL – I checked the online archive to see if she’d ever mentioned the fruit in any of her poems. Nope. She never used the word “watermelon” or even just “melon.”
So what fruits did she write about?
Well, the words “banana,” “peach,” “pear”, and “plum” were never used, and when it comes to berries, Dickinson never mentioned the “blueberry” or the “raspberry”: however, she did use “strawberries” once and “blackberry” once (although she split the words as “black berry”).
I was surprised to find that she used the word “apricot” once, in “My heart upon a little plate,” and since she used “apricot,” I thought I might as well check for “nectarine” – but no, she never used the word “nectarine.”
The fruit most often mentioned in poems by Dickinson? Coming in at third place was the word “fruit” itself. She used the word “fruit” in three different poems. In second place is the word “apple.” Apples appear in eleven different poems. In first place is the berry. “Berry” or “berries” was used in fourteen different poems. More on these fruited poems tomorrow. |
