I posted a montage of some of the lids and quipped, “My kingdom for a cup.”
| Fortunately, I did find an actual coffee cup – the ceramic type with the “Don’t Make Me Use My Teacher Voice” emblazoned across the front – so ultimately I was able to enjoy some joe and cake – and no spoiler alert needed: Both were delicious. And the experience made me wonder, did Emily Dickinson ever write about coffee in any of her poems? |
| So what’s this poem about? Notes on the Dickinson archive state this: “19 June 1861, to Susan Dickinson on the birth of Edward (Ned) Dickinson, the first child of Austin and Susan (hb140). The bottom of the manuscript, containing the last line of the poem and the signature ‘Emily,’ is now missing. It also carried a family note identifying the occasion and explaining that Toby was the cat.” |
