In case you missed the details of my distress and misery, they are recounted HERE (SPOILER ALERT: the graphic account involves striking scenes from an ancient Aztecian heart extraction ritual that some readers might find disturbing).
Below: Two haunting visual representations from yesterday's viscerally jarring events.
I shall provide the link to the roster of notable poems forthwith – or forthcoming – yeah, I’ll get to it soon enough. First though, a bit of enlightenment to ready you for the confusion. Oh, and also one warning: When the article first opens, entitled “The Ten Greatest Poems in the English Language,” and you scroll downward to access the content, you straightaway encounter the image of an unclad beauty in her boudoir – and yes, you see her bum-bum. The figure, from a painting by Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, is that of the poet Sappho, called the "Tenth Muse" by her ancient peers (“The other nine Muses were goddesses, so she was obviously held in very high regard!”).
G: The poem is in The Columbia Granger’s Index to Poetry, a compilation of the most anthologized poems.
H: The poem appears in William Harmon’s The Classic Hundred Poems and/or The Top 500 Poems.
L: The poem is part of LitHub’s “most anthologized poems of the past 25 years.”
M: Stands for “myself,” i.e., poem is among the writer’s favorite works.
