| Recent posts have centered on how I discovered poetry – and Marilyn Nelson’s book “How I Discovered Poetry” and her poem by that same name. If interested in more info about Nelson’s book and poem, I found these sites: 1. A blog entry about the book from the School Library Journal is HERE. The fifth paragraph – about Nelson’s chosen form for her poetry, unrhymed sonnets – concludes, “I’ll be interested in hearing other opinions, though, because poetry is so divisive.” |
2. This review, HERE, states, “If you want a taste, be sure to read the poems from the book that are linked below,” and yes, there is a link at the bottom of the page to 5 of the poems in the book.
3. This site, Project Muse, provides a reprint of a succinct review of Nelson’s book by Deborah Stevenson from the Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, HERE.
4. Finally – just FYI – I found one other site that focuses on the use of literary devices in poetry, and it reviewed the poem “How I Discovered Poetry”; however, I have decided not to share the link because the published interpretation of the poem is embarrassingly flawed – and I mean that the author literally misunderstood lines from the poem. This was not an issue of an individual interpretation that I disagreed with, but the written commentary contained actual & obvious errors made about what was said in the poem. I suspect this was an AI overview of the poem, and no one checked what was said.
I tried the “Contact Us” feature on the site to alert them of the errors, but their form was not functional.
