A group from the Dickinson Organization of Poetry Enthusiasts traveled to Alabama recently.  Our travelogue is HERE.  While there, we were struck by the countless number of abandoned homes and businesses we saw -- including abandoned motels, car washes, churches, schools, day care centers, apartment buildings, restaurants, and more.

We have always found beauty in abandoned places, and we have written several times on the subject -- click HERE.  We came across sooo many abandoned places in Alabama we thought we would create a separate page for all of our photos.  We have posted many below, but there are lots more to come -- so be sure to check back later for more!

One of our favorites of all the abandoned places we came across was this apartment complex in Montgomery (above).

The harm of Years is on him –
The infamy of Time –
Depose him like a Fashion
And give Dominion room.

Forget his Morning Forces
–
The Glory of Decay
Is a minuter Pageant
Than least Vitality.

     ~ Emily Dickinson

Fly – fly – but as you fly –
Remember – the second pass you by –
The Second is pursuing the Century
The Century is chasing Eternity –
What a Responsibility –
No wonder that the little Second flee –
Out of its frightened way –

  ~ Emily Dickinson

Look back on time with kindly eyes,
He doubtless did his best ;
How softly sinks his trembling sun
In human nature's west !

~ Emily Dickinson

We loved the "Old South Bae-B-Que" place we found on the way to Selma from Montgomery (below).

Because that you are going
And never coming back
And I, however absolute
May overlook your Track
–

Because that Death is final,
However first it be
This instant be suspended

Above Mortality –

     ~ Emily Dickinson
Death is a dialogue between
The spirit and the dust.
"Dissolve," says Death. The Spirit, "Sir,
I have another trust."

Death doubts it, argues from the ground.
The Spirit turns away,
Just laying off, for evidence,
An overcoat of clay.

     ~ Emily Dickinson

We love old signs. and the sign for this abandoned car wash must have been a great one (below).

To die - takes just a little while -
They say it does'nt hurt -
It's only fainter - by degrees -
A
nd then - it's out of sight -

~ Emily Dickinson

Below:  Two great abandoned properties in Selma -- the Good Samaritan Center and the Central Park hamburger drive-thru.

We loved both of these abandoned businesses in Birmingham -- especially "Debbie's Alabama Beauty College" (below).
