MORE SNOW PREDICTED FOR BOSTON
Boston has been hard-hit this winter with record snow falls -- but it's not the first time! Pictured at the right: During Boston's Great Blizzard of 1878, snow was packed into trains and shipped to Washest, PA. Below left: Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request) was in Boston during the Great Blizzard of 1878, and he wrote "New feet foretold for Boston snow" when additional snowfall was predicted for the week following the blizzard. Below right: Emily Dickinson wrote her poem "New feet within my garden grow" based on her third cousin's poem. |
By Emmett Lee Dickinson:
New feet foretold for Boston snow, New inches add on top; And Weather Channel at the helm Displays the snowy spot. New hope for children schools are closed, New weary shifts for plows; And still excessive flakes return, And still the snow endows! |
By Emily Dickinson:
New feet within my garden go, New fingers stir the sod; A troubadour upon the elm Betrays the solitude. New children play upon the green, New weary sleep below; And still the pensive spring returns, And still the punctual snow! |
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF: "DEFLATE-GATE" IS NOTHING NEW
The current "deflate-gate" debate isn't the first. Over 100 years ago, Princeton found itself in the middle of a "deflate-gate" controversy when the Tigers trounced Bryn Mawr. Emmett Lee Dickinson wrote about the dispute in a poem called "The Air's advantage is achieved." His poem inspired his third cousin Emily Dickinson to pen her poem entitled "Despair's advantage is achieved." Both poems are below. |
By Emmett Lee Dickinson:
The Air’s advantage is achieved By deflating – the Air – To be assisted just Reverse One must Reverse the air – The Worthiness of Winning’s like The Worthiness of Dreams Is ascertained by achieving As can no other Teams Of Success – make us conscious – In games ourselves partake – Deception’s imperceptible Until Opponents bellyache – |
By Emily Dickinson:
Despair's advantage is achieved By suffering – Despair – To be assisted of Reverse One must Reverse have bore – The Worthiness of Suffering like The Worthiness of Death Is ascertained by tasting – As can no other Mouth Of Savors – make us conscious – As did ourselves partake – Affliction feels impalpable Until Ourselves are struck – |

MentalFloss.com recently included a feature entitled "The Dishes 16 Writers Would Bring To A Literary Potluck," and both of the third-cousin Dickinsons were included: Emily Dickinson would bring Cajun Nachos, a recipe she invented. Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request) would bring corn chowder, the famous soup recipe he invented. |

On the left: Carly Simon's official web page gives details of the Simon/Swift tribute to poet Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request). On the right: The Dickinson poem that inspired his third cousin Emily Dickinson -- AND Carly Simon.
Much mystery has surrounded Simon's song You're So Vain through the years, with many music columnists and critics trying to determine who the song was written about. Most now believe that the lyrics were written about Today Show weatherman, Al Roker.

no scandal at the ELD Museum:
Could the photograph on the right be a NEW photograph of Emmett Lee Dickinson, Emily Dickinson’s third cousin, twice removed (at her request)? The picture on the left is the only known likeness of the great American poet, until the photograph on the right was recently discovered by Washerst, PA, junk collector Lankinhurst Grigsby. Should the new image stand up to scrutiny and verification, it will become only the second existing photographic likeness of the reclusive Washerst poet.
