The "TELL IT STRAIGHT" AWARD

From our Executive Director for Development and Expansion, Emerson Nettles:

We are extremely excited to announce that the Board of Directors of the Emmett Lee Dickinson Museum have established a major award, the Tell It Straight Award, to be bestowed annually on individuals who speak truth in the face of the lies and deception which have become the hallmark of our country's current so called "president."

Similarly, the Emily Dickinson Museum honors individuals with their Tell it Slant Award (info HERE).  The Tell It Slant Award was created in 2012 by that Museum’s Board of Governors, and that group selects the Museum's honorees. They award "individuals whose life work is imbued with the creative spirit of the Amherst poet," and the name of the award comes from Emily Dickinson's poem “Tell all the Truth but tell it slant" (below on the right).

Our Board of Directors will also select awardees -- five (or more?) names annually -- and our award is taken from Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem, "Tell all the Truth but tell it straight" (below on the left), the very poem that inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem.

By Emmett Lee Dickinson:

Tell all the Truth but tell it straight –
And don’t be fooled by lies
Too dull a cultish clan can’t see
The Truth before their eyes

As Bright'ner to the Laundry jars
The load it works to brighten
The Truth must hold the colors fast
’Fore every man is whitened –

By Emily Dickinson:

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant –
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise

As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind –

We are pleased to announce that the first recipients of the Emmett Lee Dickinson Museum's "Tell It Straight" Aware -- for speaking truth in the face of lies and deception -- are the following:

* Noel Casler
* Rachel Maccow
* Joy Reid
* Jeff Tiedrich
* Eugene Robinson
