As Time Goes By

FOUR WEEKS IN JANUARY:

Week of January 6:  So-called president Trump commits treason and incites insurrection when he sends a mob of domestic terrorists to the US Capitol to overthrow our government.  Several people die, including a police officer whom the terrorists beat to death with an American flag.
Picture

Week of January 13:  In a bi-partisan vote, the House of Representatives impeaches so-called president Trump for treason -- making Trump the only president in US history to be impeached twice.  Angry Republicans threaten continued violence and make death threats to GOP members of the House who sided with the Democrats in their appropriate and historic action.
Picture

Week of January 20:  Joe Biden is inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States.  Washington DC and the US Capitol are surrounded by the National Guard to protect everyone from the out-going president and the GOP.  Think about that.  Guards are posted to protect the ceremony from a sitting president of the United States and a conspiracy-crazed political party.
Picture

Week of January 27:  The nation gets back to business and attempts to return to order and routine.  The GOP continues to peddle the propaganda of fear as their members slide further down the QAnon rabbit hole.  News surfaces that many of them attended a planning meeting with Trump and insurrectionists on January 5th, the night before Trump's coup attempt.
Picture
At this point, our democratic republic and our Constitution has survived the attacks from Trump and the radical Right -- but really, just by the skin of our teeth!  Imagine if state officials in Georgia and other flipped states did not have the courage and convictions to stand up to tyranny?  What if those positions had been held by Q-nuts like some of the current members in the House?  We could be dealing with a completely different outcome.  I shudder to think.

Over the years, the GOP has mastered the art of voter suppression, the propaganda of fear, and the spreading of conspiracy theories.  Now they are honing their skills on election fraud. Think about it -- the next time a GOP candidate secretly calls a state official to "find" 11,800 votes -- what will happen?  (To be honest, I do think that voter fraud did happen in South Carolina this year -- evidenced by Lady G's call to Georgia to see if they could work out the same deal he likely worked out in his home state.)   The current GOP is committed to steeling more of our elections in the future (and ironically, they are always the first to say that if they don't win, the election must be rigged).

Yes, our constitution has "checks and balances" that could have prevented much of what happened over the past four years,  but I had no idea how delicate our system was -- because I had no idea that the GOP would so readily and so eagerly hold a Mr. Pillow over Lady Liberty's head in order to suffocate our democracy.

Fortunately, for now, we can breathe again -- but there is much work to be done to protect our Constitution.  Hopefully, enough GOP senators will find the courage to vote with the Democrats to convict Trump.  Good Lord, the man incited an insurrection to overthrow our government!!!  If that is not a crime for a which a sitting president should be impeached and convicted, then what the hell is?

Anyway, the news from the past four weeks called to mind Emmett Lee Dickinson's now-classic poem, "Time does go on," below on the left.  His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem with the same first line, below on the right.

By Emmett Lee Dickinson:

Time does go on –
I tell with care to those who revel now –
We have survived –
There is the truth –
We must protect it now –

By Emily Dickinson:

Time does go on –
I tell it gay to those who suffer now –
They shall survive –
There is a sun –
They dont believe it now –

With the Trump Virus running rampant across our country and with the Trump Death Toll still climbing out of control, my wife and I don't do much of what we used to do.  We don't go to movie theaters, we don't dine out in restaurants, we don't read books in coffee shops, we don't travel, etc., etc., etc.  No, Donald Trump has really destroyed what used to be   the "normal" things of life.  However, we do get outside a lot more now.  We take many walks in and around our neighborhood, and we also hike a lot in nearby Shenandoah National Park.  The other day we visited a natural area just a few miles away, and I took a few funny pictures -- see below.  : )

At the left:  I came across this tree stump, and it looked as thought there was a carving of the New York City skyline running across the top of it.   (Click the image to enlarge.)

At the right:  The base of this tree looked like a shadowy hag was staring at me.

At the left:  I'm not sure about this one -- it seemed as though maybe a number of passers-by had tried to create cairns.  I've heard that  Hikers frequently add stones to existing cairns trying to get just one more on top of the pile to bring good luck.  Alas, if that is the case, many of the rocks had toppled.

The Gale Indeed Is Done

The fireworks last night in Washington, DC, were phenomenal -- and rightly so!  Not only was yesterday the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, but it was the one week anniversary of Donald Trump's failed coup attempt to overthrow our Constitution and our democratic republic.

Trump and the GOP -- which should now be registered as a domestic terrorist organization -- failed in their insurrection, Biden has spoken his oath of office, and now the gale, indeed, is done!  In honor of Biden's inauguration, I have posted Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem "On this long storm the Rainbow rose," below on the left.  Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem with the same opening line, below on the right.

By Emmett Lee Dickinson:

On this long storm the Rainbow rose –
On this late morn – the sun –
The Clown – a listless Elephant –
Harumphed and – straggled down –

Then We rose smiling at our sets* –
The gale – indeed – was done –
Alas, how needless were his lies –
And now the truth has shone!

With quiet persevering breath –
Now daybreak – can bestir –
To Presidential – syllables
That awaken us!

*Television sets

By Emily Dickinson:

On this long storm the Rainbow rose –
On this late morn – the sun –
The Clouds – like listless Elephants –
Horizons – straggled down –

The Birds rose smiling, in their nests –
The gales – indeed – were done –
Alas, how heedless were the eyes –
On whom the summer shone!

The quiet nonchalance of death –
No Daybreak – can bestir –
The slow – Archangel's syllables
Must awaken her!

As the Criminal-in-Chief -- now a listless GOP elephant -- departed with Third Lady Melania to Florida, his adult children stood upon the tarmac and cried.  They looked like defeated grifters who lament the end of a con when they realize that their marks are on to them.

Today, though, in an attempt to show that he is still very much in the game, Trump finally unveiled his COVID action plan in Florida:  "We will bury your dead," he said defiantly as he was flanked by Donald "Traitor Tot" Junior, Eric, and Princess Ivanka.  He said that he will unveil his Healthcare Plan very soon; however, word on the street is that it is the same as his COVID plan:  "We will bury your dead."

I couldn't help myself.  When the Internets went wild yesterday following Joe Biden's inauguration with all the Bernie Sanders memes, I had to try my hand at it too.  Most of mine center on works of art, and then I also did two with movie themes (most iconic movie scenes had already been claimed -- so I did one from "Psycho" and one from "ET").

Here they are:

When The Go Low, We Vote Them Out

1/20/2021

I wish my sister was still with us today to see Joe Biden sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.  Sadly, she died of cancer in November 2019.  However, in the year before she died, she wrote and published a book of haikus entitled "When They Go Low, We Go Haiku," a tome of humorous poetry "documenting Trump's journey from President-Elect to Unindicted Co-Conspirator, three lines and seventeen syllables at a time."

Her website devoted to the book and her love of haikus and her disdain of the Swamp King, Donald Trump, is HERE.

She would have been DELIGHTED today to see Donald Trump slither away  to Night-Mar-A-Lago with a trial in the Senate hanging over his head.

In her honor, I offer this haiku:

Trump slithered away.
Biden took the oath today.
The swamp has been drained.

Glee! The Great Storm Is Over!

Happy Inauguration Day 2021!

I feel like I can breathe again -- even though the Trump Virus is spreading unremittingly.

I feel as though a real-life Dumbledore's Army has prevailed over the Dark Lord.

I feel as though the Light Side of the Force is finally with us.

I feel like we can define America in one word:  Possibilities (which -- thanks to Biden's victory -- was our Word of the Year for 2020, see HERE).

I feel an overwhelming sense of GLEE now that the great storm is over -- and in tribute to the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, I have posted Emmett Lee Dickinson's "Glee -- the great storm is over," below on the left.  Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem with the same first line, below on the right.

By Emmett Lee Dickinson:

Glee – The great storm is over –
We – have recovered our Land –
We – gone down together –
With this crazy Man –

Ring – for joyous salvation –
Toll – for our tired Souls –
Neighbor – and friend – and Voter –
Striking upon the Polls –

How will they tell the story –
When Hist’ry shake the Door –
When the Children ask –
“But his Grifting –
Did they – the Truth ignore?”

Then a silence – conveys our sorrow –
And then teardrops – well in our eyes –
And the Children – no further question –
And elation greets – Sunrise –
By Emily Dickinson:

Glee – The great storm is over –
Four – have recovered the Land –
Forty – gone down together –
Into the boiling Sand –

Ring – for the scant salvation –
Toll – for the bonnie Souls –
Neighbor – and friend – and Bridegroom –
Spinning upon the Shoals –

How they will tell the story –
When Winter shake the Door –
Till the Children urge –
But the Forty –
Did they – Come back no more?

Then a silence – suffuse the story –
And a softness – the Teller's eye –
And the Children – no further question –
And only the Sea – reply –

These Are Their Letters To The World

Did you happen to see the Washington Post today?

There in the midst of all the horrific news of our miscreant so-called "president" -- the one who staged a coup to overthrow our government -- there was quite a pleasant surprise.

There on page A19 -- almost hidden in plain sight -- was a tribute to Emmett Lee Dickinson's third cousin, Emily Dickinson.
Picture
Picture
The headline for a  letter centered at the top of the page about Apple TV's "Dickinson" declared "Wild Nights! Wild Nights!"

The caption under the photograph said, "Items left on the desk of the late poet Claudia Emerson, including a book of poems by Emily Dickinson, in Richmond in 2015."

Picture

Upon closer inspection, though, a wonderful surprise comes into view:  Every letter on the page is introduced by a line from Dickinson's poetry.

Camera Ready

I was having issues with my camera, but I thought that it might be the sim card instead of the camera.  Sooo...I put a replacement sim card in my camera, and I went out to take a few pics today to see if that would correct the problem.  So far it seems like that did the trick.

Below are some of the pics I took on my walk just so I could test things out.  Click the images to enlarge.

"For God's sake," tweeted @Rashooley on Twitter, "the controversy shouldn't be Democrats moving to impeach, it should be Republicans not calling for an immediate resignation."
Picture

Donald Trump staged a hostile coup to overthrow our government one week ago -- AND HE IS STILL IN OFFICE.

If this is NOT an impeachable offense, then that does not reflect a flaw in our Constitution -- it reveals that we have no longer have a Constitution.

It is highly likely that Trump will be impeached tomorrow -- the first president to be impeached twice -- but how many Republicans will vote to impeach him?  And later, to remove him from office?

The GOP is calling for unity -- and we should be unified in removing this cancer from our government -- BECAUSE A SITTING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES INCITED INSURRECTION TO OVERTHROW OUR DEMOCATRIC REPUBLIC.

To be honest -- THAT FACT IS UNTHINKABLE.  YET THE GOP IS TIP-TOEING AROUND TRUMP'S SEDITIOUS ACTS.

In hopes that some (most) in the GOP will miraculously grow backbones for the coming votes to impeach and remove Trump from office, I offer Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem "Dare you save a Soul at the White House?" below on the left.  Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "Dare you see a Soul at the White Heat? below on the right.

By Emmett Lee Dickinson:

Dare you save a Soul at the White House?
Then crouch within the door –
Red – is Treason’s common tint –
Shown in the hats they Wore

He fanned them Flame’s conditions,
They quivered from his Praise
Without a conscience, took the light
Of his anointed Blaze

Least Village has its Blacksmith
Whose Anvil pounds the Ore
Stands symbol for the fiendish Fool
These groundless thugs – adore –

Defining this impeachment’s Facts
With Hammer and with Blaze
Because their Designated Fight
Repudiates the Truth –

By Emily Dickinson:

Dare you see a Soul at the White Heat?
Then crouch within the door –
Red – is the Fire's common tint –
But when the vivid Ore

Has vanquished Flame's conditions,
It quivers from the Forge
Without a color, but the light
Of unanointed Blaze.

Least Village has its Blacksmith
Whose Anvil's even ring
Stands symbol for the finer Forge
That soundless tugs – within –

Refining these impatient Ores
With Hammer, and with Blaze
Until the Designated Light
Repudiate the Forge –

Coup Coup Birds

I went for a walk on the grounds of the University of Virginia today -- the university founded by Thomas Jefferson -- and it made me think about how incensed Thomas Jefferson would be that a sitting president of the United States incited insurrection against our very own democratic republic.

I also thought about the current Congressman for this district, Representative Bob Good of Virginia's 5th District, who voted to object to the Electoral College win in our free and fair election of Joe Biden.  And do you remember that Million Moron March a few weeks ago in support of Trump that was sponsored by the Proud Boys and other white supremacist groups?  Representative Good was there cheering them on.

I suspect that if Trump does not resign, and Congress moves to impeach him  -- a president who should have been removed from office and arrested last Wednesday -- then Bob Good will vote to support the Traitor-in-Chief.  Truly unbelievable -- and what is the ultimate irony in this sad, sad tale of insurrection is that the very moron's who are chanting "Stop the Steal"  are doing so on behalf of a con-man who is attempting to steal the election.

This is truly a sad and dangerous time in America -- especially when representatives in Congress like Bob Good support sedition and insurrection over defending our Constitution.
