If you come across the headline "Man Bites Dog" today, don't be alarmed -- it's National Hot Dog Day!
Emmett Lee Dickinson, the inventor of the hot dog, used to say, "I love hotdogs, and I eat them with relish!" But it was Lavinia Dicknson, Emily's sister and Emmett Lee's third cousin, who suggested topping a dog off with chili.
Emmett Lee Dickinson fell in love with Lavinia's concoction, the chili dog, from the time he took his first bite, and later he dedicated his poem "I do not crave -- why should I crave" (below on the left) to Lavinia. His poem also inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "I do not care -- why should I care" (below on the right).
