During our recent visit to North Carolina's Outer Banks, we were able to visit the Bodie Island Light House. We had hoped to drive further south to see the Cape Hatteras Light House too, but that was not to be. Due to coastal flooding on NC 12, the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, which spans the Oregon Inlet between Bodie Island from Pea Island, was closed the entire time we were there. Next time, I suppose.

The name of the island and light is "Bodie" -- but it's pronounced "body," not "Beau-die." On the inside of the light house is a plaque that says, "Body's Island and Light House," but there was no "Mr. Body." I don't know if the spelling of the island's name ever was "Body," but the current spelling is "Bodie" -- and local lore states that the name stems from the bodies that washed up on the shore after ship wrecks.
