Remember Sally Yates? As the acting US Attorney General, she attempted to tell Donald Trump honest and accurate legal advice shortly after he took office, but he didn’t want to hear what she had to say, so he fired her.
Interestingly enough, there was a video that surfaced at that time, and it showed Senator Jeff Sessions questioning Yates during her confirmation hearing to become the Deputy AG. Sessions asked, “Do you think the Attorney General has the responsibility to say ‘no’ to the president if he asks for something that’s improper?” He continued, “if the views the president wants to execute are unlawful, should the Attorney General or the Deputy Attorney General say no?”
Yates answered that the AG and Deputy AG have an obligation to follow the law and the constitution and to give independent legal advice to the president.
That certainly isn’t playing out right now between Trump and his AG. He does not want an independent Department of Justice. It seems as though all he wants is blind allegiance and pledges of loyalty.

| To be honest, this calls to mind George Orwell’s Animal Farm where the commandments change overnight to fulfill the needs of the pigs. Are we at a point where “No one is above the law, even the President of the United States” has morphed into “No one is above the law, except the President of the United States”? It’s even been said that Trump is investigating as to whether or not he can pardon himself. Think about the implication of that if the answer is “yes.” Is the “swamp” that Trump pledged to drain just getting nothing but murkier.? Of course, all of this calls to mind a poem by Emmett Lee Dickinson, “From his White Palace in the Swamp” (below on the left).
