When Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twcie removed -- at her request) invented the hotdog, he did not share his recipe with anyone. To this day, the full list of ingredients remains a mystery! What's in a hotdog? It really doesn't matter -- because they taste sooo good!
Dickinson used to say, "I love hotdogs, and I eat them with relish!"
Below (on the left) is one of Dickinson's now classic poems about the tubularl, meatty wonder. Hopefully, since today is National Hotdog Day, this poem will insprie you to run down to 7-11 to purchase and down a dog or two -- with relish! The poem did inspire third cousin Emily to pen her poem (below on the right) with the same opening line.
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: Experiment to me Is every tubular meat If it contains any Beef? The Figure of a Rod Presents upon a Rack Equally plausibly, With Meat within, is requisite To Diners, and to Me. | By Emily Dickinson: Experiment to me Is every one I meet If it contain a Kernel? The Figure of a Nut Presents upon a Tree Equally plausibly, But Meat within, is requisite To Squirrels, and to Me. |
