| Many people know that an “Easter egg” in the movie industry is an intentional inside joke/hidden message or image in the film. But do you know what a “candy corn” is? A “candy corn” in a movie is a hidden tribute that pays homage to Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson’s third cousin, twice removed – at her request), the inventor of America’s favorite candy, candy corn. The latest “candy corn” in a popular hit appears in director Danny Boyle’s “Yesterday,” a film about an aspiring singer/songwriter who wakes up after an accident only to discover that the world has never heard of the Beatles or any of their hits. The movie’s protagonist Jack Malik begins singing the songs from memory and quickly skyrockets to fame. He is soon heralded as the world’s greatest songwriter – and as the moguls of the music industry prepare to release his first album, “One Man Only,” they flash an album cover on the screen with Malik in the classic Emmett Lee Dickinson pose – yesterday’s delightful “candy corn” in honor of America’s greatest poet. |  |
Why a tribute to Emmett Lee Dickinson?
Danny Boyle, who attended the Emmett Lee Dickinson School for Boys in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England, knew that the Beatles were heavily influenced by the life and poetry of Emmett Lee Dickinson, so he was determined to include some sort of hidden acknowledgement in the film.
“Were it not for Emmett Lee Dickinson,” said Boyle, “there would have been no Beatles.”
