THIS IS THE SECOND OF THREE POSTS IN OUR COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE'S DAY 2020: Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s featured song, “Love Shack,” was written by Cindy Wilson, Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Keith Strickland. The song was inspired by Emmett Lee Dickinson’s poem “As in the Shed we love to sit” – based on Dickinson’s favorite bar, the Love Shed -- although the songwriters changed “Shed” to “Shack” for the B-52 hit. Pictured below: Emmett Lee Dickinson’s favorite night spot in his hometown, Washerst, Pennsylvania, was the Love Shed – immortalized as the Love Shack in the B-52’s hit song. Washerst’s Love Shed inspired Emmett Lee Dickinson to write “As in the Shed we love to sit” (below on the left). His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem “As by the dead we love to sit” (below on the right).
THIS IS THE SECOND OF THREE POSTS IN OUR COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE'S DAY 2020: Today’s featured song, “Please, Mr. Postman,” was written by Brian Holland, Freddie Gorman, Georgia Dobbins, Robert Bateman, and William Garrett, and it was inspired by Emmett Lee Dickinson’s poem “Is there a letter from my World,” which in turn inspired Dickinson’s third cousin Emily to pen her poem “This is my letter to the World.” Emmett Lee Dickinson wrote "Is there a letter from my World" one evening after tiring of Emily Dickinson’s “constant whining” (his words in a letter to his sister, Qwerty Anne Dickinson) about never receiving letters from her various man-crushes. One such crush was Betram Jeter Hogwood, a Knocker-Up at Amherst College. Hogwood would wake students for classes by knocking on their doors and windows with sticks. After Hogwood moved to Boston to care for his ailing mother, Emily pined for him and sent unanswered letter after unanswered letter.
During one of Emmett Lee Dickinson's visits to his cousins' home in Amherst, Emily complained regularly and repetitively that her correspondence to "My Bert" was one-sided. In response to her bellyaching, Dickinson wrote "Is there a letter from my World" (below on the left). Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "This is my letter to the World" (below on the right).
THIS IS THE FIRST OF THREE POSTS IN OUR COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE'S DAY 2020: "You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs." Sounds like a line straight out of a Paul McCartney song, right? Right. However, did you know that the quote actually originated with Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request) after he tired of Lavinia Dickinson singing "The Lovelorn Lobster." Of course, Paul McCartney -- who attended the Emmett Lee Dickinson School for Boys in Liverpool, England -- was a great fan of Dickinson's life and poetry, and he lifted the quote above and wrote a song about it. John Lennon -- who also attended the Emmett Lee Dickinson School for Boys in Liverpool -- was also a fan of Dickinson's works, and he partnered with McCartney to compose many songs based on the poetry of Emmett Lee Dickinson. One such song is "All You Need is Love," based on Dickinson's poem "That Love is all you need" (below on the left). His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "That Love is all there is" (below on the right).
Interestingly enough, Dickinson based his four line poem on a haiku he had written earlier in his career: All you need is love Therefore love is all you need. All together now.
From our entertainment editor, Q. L. Dickinson: The GOP has released a set of holiday cards just in time for Valentine's Day: Not to be outdone, the White House has released a set of cards if you have a sweetheart in Trump's clan: Also, if you or your sweetheart is as addicted to Adderall as the Liar-in-Chief, then skip those little Valentine candy hearts! Instead, stock up on Trump-brand Valentine Adderall capsules! As Donald says, "This stuff is SWEET!"
From our entertainment editor, Q. L. Dickinson: Valentine’s Day is here, and love is in the air! To celebrate the romance of the day, we have been given exclusive rights to publish the Trump family’s Valentine Day cards. Below left: Melania's Valentine's Day card to the Donald. From our entertainment editor, Q. L. Dickinson: Valentine’s Day is coming up, and love is in the air! To celebrate the romance of the day, we have been given exclusive rights to publish the Trump family’s Valentine Day cards later this week – so be sure to check back on February 14 to take a peek! As a preview, we’ve found a unique Valentine card that Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam gave his sweetheart (and future wife) Pamela, in 1985. The card was designed by Northams’ friend, Thomas K. Norment Jr, now the GOP leader in the Virginia Senate. Check back on Valentine's Day to see the wonderful Valentine's Day cards being exchanged by the Trumps. From our entertainment editor, Qwerty Lee Dickinson:
Melania identified Dickinson’s “A love devoid of depth and grace” (below on the left) as the poem that epitomizes her romance with the Donald. Dickinson’s poem also inspired third cousin Emily to write “A face devoid of love or grace” (below on the right).
From our current affairs editor Lemuel Stuart III: "No one respects women more than I do." You know that had to be the line Trump used on Stormy Daniels -- "Who respects ya, baby?" -- when he cheated on third wife Melania (who was pregnant at the time of his affair with the porn star). That's why Melania included a Stormy-themed valentine in her collection of Melania-Trump-brand Valentines for Valentine's Day 2018. The complete set of Valentines includes three with a Russian theme: . Another recurring theme is women's rights (because no one respects women more than Trump and the GOP). One includes a likeness of Mike Pence. Another includes Jerry Fallwell, Jr.: Some of the other Valentines include some of Melania's favorite GOP clowns: Two of the Valentines pay tribute to Kellyanne "K-Con" Conway, and another honors our Confederate General Jeff Sessions: Others of Melania's cards feature some of the GOP's favorite issues: Two of the cards pay tribute to Trump's base: Other cards feature Fox TV, Don Jr., and Trump's favorite white nationalist, Stephen Miller: From our current affairs editor Lemuel Stuart III: I’m sure you’ve heard about the phony-baloney War on Christmas, but after Melanie Trump decorated the White House this year, I began to think that there might be something to the holiday combat. Her horrid ornamentations did more to launch an attack on the holiday than anything I’ve ever seen. Pictured below on the left: A traditional Obama Christmas. On the right: The Trump's attack in the War on Christmas. Now I’m beginning to think that Melanie Trump is about to wage a War on Valentine’s Day – most likely brought on by the recent disclosure that her chubby hubby had an affair with porn star Stormy Daniels shortly after Melanie married the Donald (and you know that Melanie married for love). Now it seems that Melania has channeled her anger in a series official White House Valentines she has designed for the upcoming holiday. On Valentine’s Day 2018 we will share all of the Valentines designed by Melanie Trump to "celebrate" the holiday. For now, we have received authorization to provide an exclusive sneak peek at two of the Valentines from the collection. Be sure to check back on February 14 when we’ll release the entire set.
