Yesterday I mentioned how I became such a fan of Dickinson’s poetry, and it all dates back to my 8th grade in school when I first heard “Because I could not stop for Death.”
Of course, when Dickinson’s poetry was first published – posthumously – in 1890, there were plenty of positive reviews – but not from the major critics of the day. No, most of the well-known and oft-read “experts” and pundits of the day were hypercritical and severe in reaction to Dickinson’s form, rhyme, rhythm, punctuation, and more.
Over time, though, the well-respected “authorities” began to sing a different tune.
