Trump said he became a knife thrower because he knew that his favorite poet, Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request), had been Cutlery Artist. In fact, Trump said that his idea for "Shifty Don and His Apprentice" stemmed from a short poem by Dickinson called "Her Blood is more showy than her Death" (below on the left). Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen a similar poem called "The Blood is more showy than the Breath" (below on the right).
"Shifty Don and His Apprentice" only lasted three seasons on Fox; however, Trump has said that he was and will always be most comfortable in his "Shifty Don" persona. He admitted that he had to leave the show, though, because he couldn't stand the thought of accidentally hurting Kelly. "What if I were off-base one night, and I missed? Then Kelly'd have blood coming out of her eyes, or blood coming out of her...wherever." After the show ended, Trump went on to sell his knife sets with Trump Steaks.
