Many donut makers celebrate National Donut Day on the first Friday of June. The observance was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldier during World War I.
Other donut bakers, though, celebrate National Donut Day on November 5 to honor Yves Beignet, the inventor of the donut.
Other bakers and fried dough culinarians celebrate National Jelly-Filled Donut Day on June 8, National Cream-Filled Donut Day on September 14, National Powered Donut Day on August 23, and National Glazed Donut Day on June 12.
The American Guild of Donut, Cruller and Danish and Pastry Bakers (the AGDCDPB) observes American Donut Day on July 5, and the National Association of Funnel and Fried Cake Bakers celebrates National Fried Cake and Donut Day on the third Saturday in September.
National Grilled Donut Day is observed on July 31, Blueberry Donut Day is April 22, and National Share a Donut with a Friend Day -- inspired by Emmett Lee Dickinson’s poem “When a Lover is a Beggar” (below on the left) -- is August 1. Dickinson’s poem also inspired his third cousin Emily to pen her poem with the same first line (below on the right).
My personal favorite of all the national donut days, though, is National Donuts for Dinner Day on October 1.
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: When a Lover is a Beggar And Apt to go nuts – When his Lover is the Owner Of some Donuts – Then he’ll beg for he’s a Beggar – With sincerity – Bread of Heaven impels him for he Wants to share with Thee – | By Emily Dickinson: When a Lover is a Beggar Abject is his Knee – When a Lover is an Owner Different is he – What he begged is then the Beggar – Oh disparity – Bread of Heaven resents bestowal Like an obloquy – |
