On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was shot to death while jogging. He was shot by Gregory and Travis McMichael who had grabbed their guns and followed Arbery in a truck. The McMichaels were not arrested until May 7th after a video of the killing surfaced on May 5th. Gregory McMichael told police that he recognized Arbery from “prior incidents,” so they pursued him in their pickup. They pursued him.
Now a group called “Christians Against Google” has changed their Facebook page name to “Justice for Gregory and Travis Michael,” and they have proclaimed, “These 2 God-fearing men were only trying to protect their neighborhood. This area has had a string of break-ins and this man fit the description and did not comply with simple commands. Our hearts go out to the McMichael family in their time of need. Amen.”
How many ways can these people flaunt their white privilege? I almost fell out of my chair when I read the line that Arbery “did not comply with simple commands.”
Interestingly enough, armed thugs who occupied the state capitol recently in Michigan failed to comply with simple commands of their Governor. White MAGAts across the country have refused to comply with the simple command to wear masks into business establishments for public safety -- even Mike Pence refused to comply with the simply command to wear a mask at the Mayo Clinic during his recent photo opp. And have you have you seen the video of the white man swinging an axe at NYPE officers who made simple commands for him to stop? Spoiler alert: The man is still alive.
As Trump and the GOP continue to re-write our laws, re-write the facts, and re-write voting district boundaries in their attempt to re-white America, white privilege has never been stronger. It all calls to mind Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem "How firm their Sovereignty must look" (below on the left). Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "How firm Eternity must look" (below on the right).
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: How firm their Sovereignty must look The grumbling men with spite They’re always Adamant to state “For all” (but they mean “white”) – They’re mighty but they’re insecure Of those they Oversee To them not any Face compares – Unless they say we’re free | By Emily Dickinson: How firm Eternity must look To crumbling men like me The only Adamant Estate In all Identity – How mighty to the insecure Thy Physiognomy To whom not any Face cohere – Unless concealed in thee |
Great googly moogly -- shortly after I wrote the above notes and published our "Featured Poems of the Week," pictures surfaced on Twitter of the elder McMichael at a Klan rally in Rome, Georgia (pictured at the right). Plus, news reports have come out that "No burglaries were reported in neighborhood where Ahmaud Arbery was killed, contradicting suspects’ claim" -- HERE. |
