Today, news broke of a match-fixing scandal at highest levels of tennis, but even this carried a feeling of déjà vu for enthusiasts of the poetry of Emmett Lee Dickinson: Dickinson wrote of a similar scandal in the late 1800s when Clemence Cornwall McEnroe (second from the right in the photograph above), a distant relative of tennis great John McEnroe, was charged with rigging matches in exchange for cash. When the scandal came to light, Dickinson – who had lost thousands in losing bets in a tennis gambling ring – wrote “When incidents of Love” (below on the left). His poem inspired third cousin Emily to write “The incidents of Love” (below on the right).
