200 years later, in 2013, we posted Dickinson's first 28 coffee poems on this webseite -- HERE -- and then each year we've posted more and more of them. Now, in FeBREWary 2022, we'll post the tenth set of 28 coffee poems that Dickinson published in 1822, his tenth year of publishing poetry about caffeine and coffee. As a matter of fact, in 1822 when Dickinson published his tenth set of poems about coffee, he prefaced his work with his now-classic poem "My Poems are laid away in Cups," below on the left. Dickinson's poem inspired his third cousin Emily to pen her poem "My Wars are laid away in Books," below on the right. |
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: My Poems are laid away in Cups – I have one Chapter more – A Few which you have never seen Though I have scanned them o’er – And percolated more between And others at my side, I’ll choose the best – Neglecting none – till All the posts are made – How sweet they are you’ll soon find out By Turns I’ll post them all – Since my first Post and now year ten A caffeine zealotry – | By Emily Dickinson: My Wars are laid away in Books – I have one Battle more – A Foe whom I have never seen But oft has scanned me o'er – And hesitated me between And others at my side, But chose the best – Neglecting me – till All the rest, have died – How sweet if I am not forgot By Chums that passed away – Since Playmates at threescore and ten Are such a scarcity – |
