Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson’s third cousin, twice removed – at her request) had many holidays, but perhaps his favorite day of the year was the final night of Daylight Saving Time when clocks were set back an hour – providing an extra hour of sleep!
A short poem by Dickinson which begins “An hour is a sea” (below on the left) conveys just how much one hour of sleep meant to Dickinson. His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem with the same first line (below on the right).
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: An Hour is a Sea Of luxury for me – When it would Harbor sleep – | By Emily Dickinson: An Hour is a Sea Between a few, and me – With them would Harbor be – |
