Emily Dickinson once wrote, "A little Madness in the Spring." However, she was talking about the annual Pro-Am bowling tournament at Amherst Lanes in Amherst, Massachusetts, not the NCAA March Madness tournament.
The games of this year's First Round just concluded yesterday, and Friday's madness concluded with a doozie with the historic upset of 16th-ranked UMBC over the tournament's top seed UVA. Of course, the stunning result of the UVA-UMBC match up busted millions of brackets, but it also created a bit of discord among the ranks of the Dickinson Organization of Poetry Enthusiasts.
You see, I live in Baltimore County near UMBC, and Jim Asher, the world's leading authority on Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request) lives in Charlottesville, VA, the home of UVA. As a result, we spoke last week and agreed upon a not-so hefty wager centered on the outcome of last night's game. Although the surprising result means that a slight dividend will be coming my way, much more was lost by Asher than just a few bills from his wallet.
Last night's madness called to mind Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem "Ample make this bet" (below on the left). Dickinson's poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "Ample make this bed" (below on the right).
I doubt that Emmett Lee Dickinson's poem will inspire Mr. Asher to recover from his grief anytime soon. If anything, perhaps Emily's poem will inspire him to sleep it off? After all, right now his nerves are sitting ceremonious -- like tombs.
Even though this is the hour of lead, he'll get over the loss soon enough.
By Emmett Lee Dickinson: Ample make this Bet – Make this Bet with Awe – With it wait till Brackets bust Prevalent with Flaw. Be its Matrix straight – Be its Thrillers brief – Let no Surprise' upset mean I erupt with Grief – | By Emily Dickinson: Ample make this Bed – Make this Bed with Awe – In it wait till Judgment break Excellent and Fair. Be its Mattress straight – Be its Pillow round – Let no Sunrise' yellow noise Interrupt this Ground – |
