Of course, paper is the number one cause for paper cuts, but did you know that the pages of poetry books -- specifically Emmett Lee Dickinson poetry books -- are the second leading cause? The third main cause is paper grocery bags, and the fourth is index cards. Emmett Lee Dickinson (Emily Dickinson's third cousin, twice removed -- at her request) established National Paper Cut Awareness Day in 1856 after he suffered a nasty paper cut from a rejection letter from Tobias Hugginkhist, literary critic and editor of the Pacific Bulletin and Journal, to inquire if the PB & J would consider publishing some of his poetry. |  |
Dickinson wrote about his affliction and agony in his poem "My harmed Thumb shows its shallow scar" (below on the left). His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "The healed Heart shows its shallow scar" (below on the right).
