My plan is to provide this information to a contact at the Emily Dickinson Museum to see if they can help -- OR -- perhaps they can tell me I'm being too pedantic? I dunno -- does this matter really matter? LOL -- well, to me, it does!
Okay, so here's the problem:
The Poetry Foundation has various Dickinson poems linked on its site. One, “It sifts through Leaden Sieves,” is shown as number 291 -- pictured at the right. Please note that this is the 5-stanza version of this poem; there is also a 3-stanza version – and the only thing the two poems have in common is the opening stanza. |
And just as a side note: I have NOT looked through all of the other Dickinson poems on the PF site so I'm not sure exactly how wide-spread this numbering scandal is! I'll check the others in the near future when I have a little bit more spare time (i.e., this summer).
