In the late 1800s, Dickinson established March 16 as World Sleep Day. He later wrote a short poem about sleep (and sleep talking) in "I crashed upon the Shoal of Thought" (below on the left). In this poem, Dickinson coined the slang terms "crash" and "cop some zees" for "sleep."
His poem inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem "If wrecked upon the Shoal of Thought" (below on the right).
By Emmett Lee Dickinson:
I crashed upon the Shoal of Thought
How fast I copped the Zees!
The only Sign of Life that shown
Was sound – Somniloquy –
By Emily Dickinson:
If wrecked upon the Shoal of Thought
How is it with the Sea?
The only Vessel that is shunned
Is safe – Simplicity –
