Now we're just days away from Super Bowl 50, so we thought we’d post another of Dickinson’s many poems about football, “They feel no shame to be Alive” (below on the left) about the two teams that survive each season to face off in the Super Bowl.
Dickinson’s poem inspired the NFL to award rings to the winning teams (although for Super Bowl I, the champions received a ring on a metal keyring). His poem also inspired third cousin Emily to pen her poem, “It feels a shame to be Alive” (below on the right).

As we then watch – sufficient worth – For each Enormous Goal And life – splendid be – for Us -- With Battle’s – Super Bowl! It will be – a Renown – to view – To see the Team that wins – The unrestrained – Saviors – Receive the Golden Rings – | By Emily Dickinson: It feels a shame to be Alive – When Men so brave – are dead – One envies the Distinguished Dust – Permitted – such a Head – The Stone – that tells defending Whom This Spartan put away What little of Him we – possessed In Pawn for Liberty – The price is great – Sublimely paid – Do we deserve – a Thing – That lives – like Dollars – must be piled Before we may obtain? Are we that wait – sufficient worth – That such Enormous Pearl As life – dissolved be – for Us – In Battle's – horrid Bowl? It may be – a Renown to live – I think the Man who die – Those unsustained – Saviors – Present Divinity – |
