I scrolled through the slides to number 27 of 31, and there she was with (supposedly) her last words: “I must go in, for the fog is rising.”
The article linked HERE from Poets.org, includes info about this: “In her last days she was only able to write short notes, and her ‘briefest last message,’ according to her niece, Martha, contained the ominous and poetic last words: ‘I must go in; the fog is rising.’”
The article mentions that she did, indeed, write short notes from her bed, and her last one – to her cousins – included just two words: “Called Back.” This article, “Emily Dickinson and Death,” from the ED Museum -- HERE -- does not mention the poet’s final words (passed on by her niece); however, it does state that the haunting message “Called Back” is etched into her tombstone. |
