In tribute to my upcoming art museum tour, I looked up the number of times “art” appears in Dickinson’s poetry – 35 different poems – but many of them show up as the old-fashioned version of “are,” as in “Where thou art – that is home” and “Art thou the thing I wanted?” However, there are times when she used the word “art” to mean the visual expression of human understanding and imagination; for example, check out the use of “art” in line 23 of “I would not paint – a picture.” Then, just for fun, I ran a Google image search on “Emily Dickinson art” – and below are just a few of the images that came up.
